If you look at the criteria that are used to come up with a decision who will be the

awardee, you will find that Jacob Hertz prize is awarded for outstanding academic achievements

and excellent research. And there is no doubt that the research committee of the Faculty

of Medicine and our Faculty Council have once again made a brilliant decision.

But I think 2011 was a cornerstone because two major events happened. On one hand the

FDA and the EMA approved the first in class immune checkpoint inhibitor CTLF4 blockade

was born. Your voice with our dearest James Allison as a discoverer and we could finally

end up curing 15% of metastatic melanoma. And at the same time our dearest Hal Steinman

together with Bruce Butler and Jules Hoffman were awarded the Nobel Prize for innate immunity,

basically the discovery of dendritic cells and toll-like receptor agonist.

Let me share a quote from Laurence. A doctor who doesn't think scientifically can't understand

what they are doing with their patients. I think she's right.
